Thousands of new residents moved to Houston in recent years, spurred by the city’s incredible job growth during the energy boom.

 

Houston led the nation in relocation activity, according to reports from the Texas Association of Realtors and moving companies like U-Haul. The relocation frenzy was a boon to local residential brokerages and relocation companies, charged with helping new residents find homes in the Bayou City.

 

However, relocation activity has slowed amid the oil slump, said Amy Bernstein, founder and president of Bernstein Realty. The Houston-based residential brokerage ranked No. 24 on Houston Business Journal’s 2016 List of the highest-grossing residential real estate brokerages in Houston, with $209.2 million in local sales volume reported in 2015. The 30-year-old company was also on HBJ’s Fast 100 List of the fastest-growing companies in 2015.

“We’ve definitely seen a slowdown in the market,” Bernstein said. “But we’re still seeing activity.”
