Derek has worked in the energy industry for 39 years. He started his career as a student apprentice with BP Tanker Company gaining an HND in Marine Engineering. He worked in a variety of roles within the oil & gas industry with John Brown Engineering, Marathon Oil UK, APG/Salamis JV, prior to joining Wood Group Engineering as Managing Director in Aberdeen in 1996.

As Managing Director for Integrated Services, Derek was responsible for several large WGE contracts in the UK North Sea and for WGE’s expansion overseas – initially into Colombia and Venezuela.

In 1999, Derek transferred to Houston and assumed responsibility for Wood Group’s Engineering and Production Facilities, businesses in North and South America. During his period in Houston he grew the business he was responsible for from $20m pa to nearly $2bn pa. In his most recent role prior to retirement at the end of 2013, Derek was responsible for the Wood Group PSN businesses in Canada, USA, Latin America and the CaribbeanDerek is a registered Incorporated Engineer with the Engineering Council (UK), and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers; a member of the Energy Institute; a director of Shawcor Ltd, a non executive director of WFS Technologies and President and a director of the BABC in Houston. He was appointed OBE in the 2007 New Year’s Honour’s List.

Derek was involved in the development of the Saltire Foundation and is a director of the Foundation. He is a founder member of the Globalscot network and was inducted into the Globalscot Hall of fame in May 2012.

Derek has been married to his wife Jean for over 38 years. They have a son Stuart, a daughter Heather and two grandsons. His interests are watching most sports, particularly football and playing golf.
