Celebration of St. Paul's Cathedral 300th Anniversary Celebrated in Houston
By Act of Parliament, on Christmas Day, 1711, the construction of Sir Christopher Wren’s architectural masterpiece, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, was officially declared complete.
On February 29, 2012, a distinguished Member of Parliament, Nicholas Soames, grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, will be present and speak at the Houston Country Club for a 300th Anniversary Benefit Dinner, at which The Honorable James A. Baker, III is also planning to offer brief remarks.
Serving as Honorary Co-Chairs alongside Secretary Baker and Mrs. Susan Baker are another major American statesman and his wife, The Honorable George P. Shultz and Mrs. Charlotte Shultz. A videotaped greeting from Secretary Shultz, shot from under the Cathedral’s iconic dome, will be part of the evening’s program.
Serving as Event Chair is Susan Howard, who is highly recognized in the Houston community for her leadership on behalf numerous philanthropic causes.
In addition to uplifting speech, the evening’s program will draw upon the stirring words and music that helped sustain the British people during a most daunting time in their history, and making it, in Churchill’s immortal words, “their finest hour.” Taking their cue from the quintessentially British tradition of the Last Night of the Proms, all participants will be encouraged to join in singing such favorites as “We’ll meet again” and “Jerusalem.”
This fundraising dinner will provide St. Paul’s with much needed funding to restore its Wren Library and, for the first time, allow public access to it; support the Cathedral in its educational outreach mission to an estimated 14,000 economically disadvantaged children per year, many from the immediate neighborhoods; and establish the “Houston Greatest Generation Fund” in honor of those who confronted Nazi tyranny , including the 28,000 US military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice and whose names are inscribed on the Role of Honor in the Cathedral’s American Memorial Chapel.
The evening’s program begins at 6 PM with a reception and silent auction, followed by dinner at 7 PM, at the Houston Country Club, One Potomac Drive, Houston. Dress is Black Tie Optional, with National Dress, and Decorations. Individual tickets at $250 and further information may be obtained by going to www.stpaulsusa.org
