The Obama Administration this morning unveiled its FY 2011 budget request, including a proposed $3.515 billion for AIP and significant proposed increases in funding to deploy Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines at screening checkpoints and for other homeland security priorities. NextGen – The Administration's budget request includes $1.14 billion for the Next Generation Air Transportation System - a 30 percent increase from FY10. According to budget documents, "The 2011 Budget supports the transformation from a national ground-based radar surveillance system to a more accurate satellite-based surveillance system; the development of more efficient routes through the airspace; and the improvement of aviation weather information."
The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, today made the following observations regarding the White House budget proposal:
The FAA does request a 30 percent increase in its budget for NextGen programs to $1.1 billion.
“We urge Congress to make the needed investment in equipage infrastructure to ensure that the passengers and users of the air traffic control system will realize the benefits of the government’s investment,” said May. “We are pleased that the Administration’s proposed $4 billion for the National Infrastructure Innovation and Finance Fund includes eligibility for aviation, and we believe that an appropriate share of these dollars should be spent on the critical element of NextGen equipage.”
