What characterizes a great royal portrait? The paintings in the British Royal Collection provide an unparalleled history of the royal image from Hans Holbein the Younger in the sixteenth century through Van Dyck, Thomas Gainsborough and Thomas Lawrence to a contemporary painter such as Lucian Freud. Every major contributor to this great tradition is represented in the collection by some of their most important and audacious work. Christopher Lloyd examines the history of the royal portrait in Britain explaining how sustaining the tradition proved so difficult during the nineteenth century but also how it might be revived today.
