(This is a special program from the USGBC-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter´s International Perspective Series that is designed to bring new technology, information and ideas from the global community to the communities we serve.)

Drive a fuel efficient car but sit in traffic? Do you drive through bottlenecks daily?

If you do, then you realize that vehicle emission is only part of the transportation problem. You intuitively understand that
carbon and road development is part of the challenge and part of the solution in energy consumption. You understand that we need to think about intelligent transportation systems.

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) address problems caused by traffic congestion. The ITS industry promotes a synergy of new information technology, for simulation, real-time control of traffic communication networks to address it.

ITS is being implemented in Europe now and will be the next new sustainability trend in the United States within a few years. Get a head start on the new trend by attending a special presentation in our International Perspectives Series, a series that will be bringing international speakers to the chapter in an effort to inspire, encourage and educate our members and public on emerging and new technologies.

"Beyond Hybrids" will showcase an overview of the the Intelligent Transportation of America´s Sustainability Forum, its various activities and recent and near-term products. Similar activities underway in the United Kingdom (i.e., the Carbon Working Group of ITS-UK) will also be presented.

About the Speaker

Keith McCabe is a traffic technologist from the United Kingdom with over 30 years of experience of solving traffic problems. He specializes in algorithms for traffic control and innovative ways of managing traffic problems to improve safety, economic and environmental issues. He has been involved in air quality management schemes building real time air pollution models and implementing transport schemes that respond in real time to air quality problems. He is the current chair the ITS UK Carbon Working Group which is investigating how to develop technological solutions to reduce transport related greenhouse gas emissions. He also chairs the Institute of Engineering and Technology Manchester Transport Technology Interest Group. He is responsible for developing carbon tools to help understand the relationship between travel behaviour and emissions. This includes developing a tool that plugs into a traffic control systems for a city and provides an estimate on a 15-minute segment basis of the emissions from the traffic in the city.
